Newborn baby and maternity photography in London and Cambridge

I love photographing newborn babies - they are just so tiny and beautiful, and there is something wondrous about the first couple of weeks. As with all my work, my newborn baby portrait sessions are designed to be very relaxed and we work around the needs of your baby, taking breaks for naps, feeds, nappy changes and anything else that your baby requires so that they feel calm and secure throughout. We can take pictures when your baby is awake and interacting with you, and also when they are fast asleep.

I want your pictures to be very personal to you, so I’ll visit to photograph you at home or at a place that is special to you, or a combination of locations. If we are taking pictures in your home we'll move around the house, using different rooms to get different backgrounds and looks to your pictures, and we can do a combination of indoor and outdoor photographs.

Newborn baby photographs

I recommend photographing your baby within the first few days after your baby is born for a newborn baby portrait session (ideally days four, five or six), or waiting until your baby is approximately twelve weeks old when they are able to support their neck whilst lying on their tummies (for more information about having pictures of your baby taken when they’re a little older, please take a look at the dedicated babies section). If you’d be interested in Helen being your newborn baby photographer, please contact us in plenty of time so that we can schedule a portrait session for you.

What to expect from your portrait session

As with all our portrait sessions, everything is very fun and relaxed. I will visit you at home for your portrait session and starting nice and early - straight after breakfast is usually best - and we'll spend the morning together with plenty of time for feeds, changes and naps. We can take a break for a cup of coffee whilst your baby has their mid-morning nap, then carry on with some more pictures afterwards, perhaps heading outdoors for some pictures in the park or your garden. I work around your child's routine to ensure that your baby feels relaxed and everyone enjoys the session.

Maternity and pregnancy photography

Maternity and newborn photography naturally fit together, and so I suggest that you have two portrait sessions: one to record your pregnancy and the second, in the first few days after your baby is born, to celebrate the new addition to your family. These sessions lend themselves perfectly to creating an album which records this magical time; the early images being of your pregnancy photography, and later images of your newly extended family.

When to schedule your maternity photographs

I advise that you book your maternity portraits after your twenty-week scan, to take place between twenty-four and thirty-four weeks. It is best not to book maternity sessions too close to your due date in case your baby decides to arrive early. Once your baby is born, we suggest that you add us to your text or email list for notifying your friends and family. We can then arrange a time as soon as possible for Helen to visit and photograph your new baby.

What happens after your portrait session

After your shoot, we will arrange a viewing session at your home. I want you to enjoy your photographs and to help you have the best photographs in the best format as quickly as possible, a member of the Helen Bartlett Photography team will contact you soon after your portrait shoot to arrange a viewing session at your home. The aim of this session is to show you what is possible with your photographs. You will see the pictures on a large screen and look at an album design, ideas for multi-aperture frames and sequences of prints or canvases that I will prepare for your consideration. You can order at the viewing sessions, and there is a ten percent discount should you wish to place your order at this time. Please refer our prices and products section for more information regarding the high-quality bespoke products that we offer.
