Just One - Honor

Posted in Just One at 13:00 on 28/04/2014

I’ve always loved photographing children and water – whether it's with hoses in the back garden, water pistols in the driveway, charging into the sea or jumping into a pool. Last year I even started taking the odd underwater picture, which I have really enjoyed.

This picture of Honor playing in the family swimming pool caught my eye as I was downloading my memory cards and I love the joy in it – it's pure happiness caught in a five hundredth of a second. This is one of the things I love about my work. I might be with a family for a whole morning, but the sum total of time my finger is on the shutter of the camera may only be a single second, with each picture captured in a tiny fraction of that - a slice of time, a fleeting expression, a moment of joy. This is the photographer's art and the thing that makes my heart soar with happiness - capturing that tiny moment, that split second, where everything comes together to produce an image that really captures the spirit of the child, the day, the sheer joy of being alive. This image, to me, does just that.

I hope you like it, today’s 'Just One' preview image from my recent family photo shoot in Suffolk.

Photography at Ebony Horse Club in Brixton

Posted in Commercial at 14:00 on 25/04/2014

Two years ago, I was lucky enough to spend a day at Ebony Horse Club in Brixton photographing the children and the horses to provide photographs for the charity to use in their publicity materials (and you can see some of the photographs from my previous visit here). My great friend Letty worked at Ebony Horse Club at the time, and had told me what a wonderful place it was - I remember being so excited when I first arrived and then having the most incredible day. It truly is a wonderful place - set in the heart of Brixton, it is a thriving riding school teaching children from the local area to ride, and also to care for the horses and to look after the stables themselves.

I was so thrilled to be asked to visit again. Many of the children who I had met last time are still regularly riding at Ebony, having progressed from nervous juniors to the experienced senior riders. They are now helping the younger children - showing them the ropes, keeping everything running smoothly, and the yard spick and span. It’s clear the children feel an incredible pride in the stables and their place as part of the community – they all had favourite ponies and were keen to tell me all about their different personalities.

I also loved hearing about their plans for the future, as many of the children were planning careers based around animals - vets and veterinary nurses being extremely popular choices - and it was great to see that they had everything planned so that they could achieve those goals. The day after I visited, a group were visiting the National Stud in Newmarket – opportunities that will be remembered all their lives.

It was wonderful to see how the children’s riding had come on, too – some of the children who last time were being led round were now confidently taking on large jumps and riding with great skill. It was wonderful to see.

Here are some of my favourite pictures from the day – I do hope you enjoy them. Also, do take a look at Ebony Horse Club's website and have a read about the wonderful work they are doing there. Their mission statement states ‘at Ebony Horse Club we uses horses to improve the education, life skills and aspirations of disadvantaged young people growing up in Brixton, South London. We teach riding and horse care, take groups to outdoor events, in and outside of London, and mentor children experiencing significant challenges in their everyday lives’ – it’s an incredible thing that they do and equally, should you be looking for a charity to support this year, this really is a very special place and deserves any help you can give.

My inspiration - my Dad's photographs of my childhood - William's hovercraft

Posted in My Inspiration at 10:00 on 23/04/2014

Today's blog post continues my monthly exploration of my father's photographs of my own childhood, which are pictures that have inspired me and shaped the photographer I have become over the years.

Each photograph has elements that I try to incorporate into my work each and every day. This picture is all about the light - I absolutely love the light. It's also about a moment in time and about my brother William's skill and tenacity building a hovercraft for his GCSE technology. Admittedly, the hovercraft had a design flaw which meant that it didn't work, but at least William discovered that before he destroyed it in an abortive trip across the boating pond.

I think this shot is great as it captures the scale of the project - it takes up the whole of the dining room table with so many intricate elements, it was quite a build. I love how the delicate side light picks up on all the details, really emphasising the shape of the craft. I also love how William is so beautifully lit as he carries on with his work, oblivious to Dad taking photographs in the corner. A picture of William looking up proudly would have had its place as a record shot, but this shot has longevity and staying power as it's unobtrusive - a moment documented and by doing so quietly, from the sidelines, Dad tells us so much more about his son.

With its beautiful light and wonderful tones, it is a great photograph. It also really captures William's personality and what he has achieved at this time - I love it and I hope you will, too.

Baby and family photography in Fulham and Parsons Green, SW London

Posted in Family at 10:00 on 20/04/2014

I love my regular trips to Parsons Green in South West London to see Carlos, Jennifer and their beautiful children Stella and Thomas. I visited just before Christmas for Thomas' newborn photography shoot and I was thrilled to visit again when Thomas was four months old and already such a delightful, smiley little chap.

It was a very wet day for our photo shoot so we decided to stay indoors this time and that worked so well, as I was able to capture all the little things that make up this time in the family's life - the games (when I arrived, Stella's tea party was already set out on the kitchen floor), the snuggles and cuddles in the playroom, and the beautiful family room so full of things to look at - a particular favourite of Stella's being the albums from our previous shoots. It is such a pleasure for me as a children's photographer to see the pictures being looked and and enjoyed by my little subjects, and Stella clearly loves her albums and all the pictures within.

I'm always fascinated by the games children play and the world of make-believe that can keep them entertained for hours. Stella and her woollen fox had a wonderful time stashing her wooden cakes in her pockets (the pockets didn't fit the plates, but not through lack of trying you can be sure) and 'sleeping' in the corner, the fox snuggled on Stella's back. It's lovely to photograph these little things - unplanned and unprompted - that really show a child's personality and what they enjoy doing when left to their own devices. I know that Stella will really enjoy looking back on these pictures when she is older, probably with a certain amount of amused bemusement - I know I often feel like that when looking at pictures from my childhood and thinking 'what on earth made me think to do that, but boy oh boy, it looks like a good game!'

We also captured some family pictures upstairs on the bed, which works very well as a spot for baby photography as it gives the little ones a nice safe area to roll around and play without risking a bump on a hard floor. Thomas was so happy to be playing with his big sister and to be cuddled by his mum and dad, and even to pose for individual portraits - laughing and smiling and then, my absolute favourite, the quizzical look to the camera lens that just melts my heart. He's such a beautiful little boy.

As always, I'm so pleased with these pictures from our baby, children and family photo shoot in Parsons Green in South West London. As a photographer, I work so hard each day to capture something new - something special for each and every client, something that really captures each family in their own unforgettable way. I do hope you enjoy these pictures as much as I do.

Press coverage in local magazines: Crouch End Connections, the Muswell Hill Flyer and the Highgate Handbook

Posted in In the press at 10:00 on 17/04/2014

It's always lovely to be featured in the local press and so we were thrilled when Crouch End Connections, the Muswell Hill Flyer and Highgate Handbook published an article on us recently in their three sister magazines. I love living in North London and really enjoy the Crouch End magazine, which keeps me up-to-date with what is happening in our immediate locality - a thriving and fascinating area of London.

The article in Crouch End Connections focused on the benefits of having regular family photo shoots, creating an incredible document of a child's upbringing that can be captured in photographs. This includes images that focus on the surface elements - such as how the children look at each age - but also images that capture the essence of the child themselves; nervous excitement and wariness at the arrival of a new brother or sister, the fun of discovering just how much fun it is to have a playmate, the strong bond of siblings, and the pride and happiness of parents. These things are so lovely to capture and so important to have as a grown-up - it's no surprise that photos are the item most people say they would rescue from a burning house.

At each children's and family photography session, I capture a wide variety of really wonderful pictures - I don't aim for just one image of each child, but lots of images with different pictures of the children in different moods as the morning progresses including family shots, action shots and beautiful portraits.

This variety enables me to produce what I believe to be a much more true and accurate depiction of my subjects than I would be able to do in a single image. While there will often be a few really stand-out images that you might like to print really big for the wall - such as a dramatic environmental portrait perfect for a 40" x 60" inch print - there will also be a selection of clear, dramatic and beautiful portraits perfect for a collection of smaller frames, and some images of the children playing, interacting and being themselves which work so well to tell stories, capturing the essence of the family at a particular time.

I'm sure it is this variety to my work - how I always go the extra mile, pushing myself to produce something special on each and every shoot - that encourages my clients to return again and again to update their family photographs. We tell a story and that story is of each unique, wonderful and individual child and how they fit into their world and those within it.

These long-term photographic projects entered into with my wonderful clients are the things I am most proud of; the family featured in the article on my children and family photography business in the Crouch End Connection have been photographed by me fifteen times over the past eight years, and the pictures we have capture so many lovely moments in their childhood.

If you would be interested in creating a photographic record for your own family, please browse through the various portfolios on our website such as the family photography portfolio and children's photography portfolio to see lots of examples of my work - I have worked with more than a thousand families and have over ten years’ experience, so you can be sure that I will capture the very best photographs of you and your children, and that we will all have a lot of fun along the way too.
